Job description
This is a Spectator Safety Management role. The role will involve the planning and preparation of event safety documentation for The Championships, as well as acting as one of a team of Safety Officers responsible for operational safety management issues on event days.
What you will be doing
- This role will involve working three days per week, ideally, Tuesday to Thursday, although there may be room for some flexibility, for the majority of the year working towards full time hours from May until the end of the Championships each year
- Operate as one of a team of safety officers at The Championships which includes overall control of safety management in collaboration with other stakeholders present in the Operations Centre including emergency services, venue operations teams and safety and security providers.
- You will be responsible for making any event safety related decisions on event days, when you are the duty safety officer, according to the Command, Control and Communication structure of The Championships.
- As ‘Safety Officer’, ensure the conditions contained in the Safety Certificate are met to ensure reasonable safety of spectators and compliance with the Grounds regulations.
- Ensure that key groups are briefed in advance of The Championships in relation to matters of safety and general contingency procedures.
- Support the Head of Safety and Security by having a complete understanding of the Event Safety Operations Manual in accordance with the Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds (Sixth Edition) and the Supplementary Guidance 03: Event Safety Management.
- Assist the Head of Safety and Security to develop, plan and prepare the necessary documentation for compliance with relevant legislation and guidance as well as operational requirements. This will include the Operations Manual, Crowd Management plans and Contingency Plans.
- Assume responsibility for updating and maintaining internal records and reports as required.
- In collaboration with Estate Management ensure that all life safety systems are checked daily during each day of The Championships in conjunction with the nominated Safety Officers of the day.
- Assume responsibility for maintaining a contemporaneous and auditable log of all events, incidents and decisions in the Operations Centre.
- Support the build-up events prior to The Championships such as the Qualifying Competition at Roehampton and any other events and / or venues as required.
- You will be required to be available for the three weeks across the Qualifying Competition which immediately precedes the Championships and the Championships fortnight itself.
- The role will require a flexible approach to hours and weekends preceding and during The Championships.
About you
- A minimum of a Level 4 NVQ qualification in Spectator Safety Management.
- A thorough understanding of current legislation, guidance and best practice relevant to sports stadia and outdoor events.
- Extensive experience of crowd management and a commitment to ensuring and improving safety at events
- Significant operational safety officer experience at major sporting events
- Be able to provide evidence of safety planning of major events with an attendance of in excess of 30 000.
- Previous experience in a similar leadership role.
- Evidence of the ability to work with internal and external stakeholders to provide safe outcomes and great guest experience.
- Evidence of continued professional development in an event safety environment, including attendance at conferences and/or obtaining qualifications in spectator safety or health and safety.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills.
- Strong planning and organising skills.
