Job description

To deliver the Museum & Collections vision by supporting the care, presentation and interpretation of the heritage collections through technical work which will enhance the guest experience and safety.

What you will be doing

  • Mount, frame and hang heritage collection items and non-collection creative elements across the museum, wider site and external locations when required. Coordinate and oversee any large-scale framing projects with external suppliers.
  • Support maintenance and improvement of museum galleries, storage facilities and non-collection displays, including repairs and procurement of spares.
  • Provide technical advice on exhibition projects including display solutions ie. set works and plinths, showcases, 3D design, lighting, materials, graphics, accessibility and maintenance requirements. Meet with designers and external stakeholders as required within this remit.
  • Assist with installation, decant and maintenance of exhibitions and displays, supervising contractors and maintaining security standards Maintain showcases and security standards such as showcase locks.
  • Support collections management through safe handling, movement, transport and bespoke packing of collections.
  • Manage stored and spare exhibition furniture, AV and equipment, maintaining accurate inventories.
  • Ensure health and safety practices and procedures are followed, and maintain the workshops and equipment in clean and safe working condition.
  • Support emergency salvage procedures when required.
  • Provide creative and technical support, including AV assistance, when requested.

What you will be doing during The Championships

  • Work additional hours During the Qualifying Competition and The Championships as required.
  • Support Championships operations, including setting up museum galleries and site-wide displays. Take on tasks that may sit outside of your usual remit during this period.
  • Lead on the delivery of the annual poster hang including overseeing framing, de-installation and installation as well as any snagging and challenges.
  • Work collaboratively with other teams and departments to deliver operational requirements.

About you

  • Proven experience of creating bespoke mounts, in materials such as metal and Perspex.
  • Experience in a museum, gallery or heritage environment, including exhibition installation and handling fragile collections.
  • Able to take on physical demands of the role, including lifting, carrying heavy/awkward items and working at height.
  • Strong knowledge of H&S legislation and COSHH and experience of producing risk assessments and method statements.
  • Experience in woodworking/carpentry and use of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to select and evaluate materials for potential defects; read and interpret designs to meet specifications; install fixtures and fittings.
  • Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks to deadlines.
  • Clear communicator and effective team player with a methodical and self-motivated approach.
  • Creative problem-solving skills with ability to assess hazards and mitigate risks.
  • Full UK driving license.
  • IT proficiency including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Project management and contractor liaison experience desirable.
  • Relevant certifications desirable (PASMA, SSSTS/CITB); training provided if required.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends when required, with commitment to professional development.
