Gardening Supervisor
Job description
What you’ll be doing
- Provide end to end line management of a team of Gardeners to include setting objectives, managing performance, managing the annual appraisal process.
- As instructed by the Lead Gardener, undertake the day-to-day management of work schedules, task allocation and ensure that workload is prioritised and undertaken within agreed timelines
- Oversee the day-to-day management of the grounds across all sites to ensure they are maintained to the highest standard
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and oversee the completion of works to recognised horticultural standards.
- Liaise with the Lead Gardener to ensure training, use of equipment, use of hazardous chemicals, risk assessments, working practices and accident recording are in place
- Support the delivery of the Tournament overlay to include the main site, AECCSG site, Wimbledon Queue, All Hospitality areas
- Respond to feedback and requests for changes promptly and efficiently
- Be responsible for monitoring all machinery to ensure it is fit for purpose, regularly maintained and used appropriately
- Supervise planting and plant management to include feeding, watering, weeding, clearing, pruning, strimming, blowing and hedge cutting
- Manage the irrigation system on a day-to-day basis
Other Information
- Basic working hours are normally 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, with an hour for breaks, although flexibility is required to meet the demands of the job, including working overtime when needed
- During The Championships a different pattern of hours will be required to include an earlier starting time, and some additional hours will be required to meet the demands of the job (in previous years staff have worked from 6am to 2pm). It is anticipated that daily cover will be required on a rota basis until 7pm
- Please note, it will be necessary to work the weekend immediately before The Championships
About You
- Appropriate level of horticultural knowledge and practical experience gained in a professional environment
- Self-starter with a high level of drive and determination to deliver results to an excellent standard
- Proactive, pragmatic approach with an eye for detail
- Ability to operate effectively and actively prioritise in an evolving environment
- Qualified to RHS level 2 Horticulture (or equivalent). Holder of PA1 and PA6 qualifications
- Current full driving licence (Category B)
- Experience in the use of and maintenance of Toro links irrigations systems
- Experience of operating machinery i.e. forklift/MEWP e.g. Genie or Scissor lift
- Good written and verbal communication skills, able to work with numbers and Microsoft Office. Able to build strong working relationships with key internal stakeholders
- Willing to work extra hours and days in the build up to, and during, The Championships
- Organised, efficient, professional and reliable. Able to prioritise, work to deadlines and delegate tasks appropriately.
- Able to fulfil physical requirement a gardening role

Founded in 1868, The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) is a private members’ club which organises and stages The Championships, Wimbledon.
The AELTC has delivered substantial top line growth in recent years and expects that growth to continue in conjunction with an ambitious investment programme in the years ahead, including the construction of a retractable roof over No.1 Court.
The Horticultural Services Department designs and delivers the landscaping in accordance with the Strategic Plan to encompass multiple sites. We provide landscaping at the heart of ‘Tennis in an English Garden’ adding up to 28,000 additional plants to enhance the site and experience for spectators, members and visitors. Throughout the rest of the year the site is maintained and managed to a high standard by an established and experienced horticultural team.
This supports the AELTC’s goal of delivering the world’s premier tennis tournament and to support one of the world’s most prestigious tennis clubs.
