Job description
Working as part of our year-round BBG Instructor team, your responsibilities will involve training and supervising prospective ball boys and ball girls (BBGs) from a range of local schools.
We are looking for people who are available to attend a minimum of two, preferably three, BBG training sessions a week from February to March (Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays) and from April to June (Monday to Thursday inclusive). There are also some weekend training sessions at various points during the year (March, May and June). Staff arrival is between 15:15-15:30 until sessions end at 18:30. The majority of training sessions take place at the AELTC Community Tennis Centre, Raynes Park.
You should also be available for some of the pre-Championships events which are considered part of the training programme; to include grass court training, Wild Card Play-offs and the Qualifying Competition.
If shortlisted, interviews will take place at the end of November / beginning of December and will include a practical.
What you will be doing
- Designing, running and supervising drills and exercises for the BBGs; either working independently or in collaboration with members of the existing team
- Taking an active lead in the supervision and instruction of BBGs in respect of their core skills of feeding, rolling and receiving
- Providing instruction and guidance on all set pieces, e.g. ball change, tie break and the BBG’s role within them
- Providing constructive feedback on how the BBGs may improve, ensuring that progress is maintained throughout the programme
- Be actively involved in the assessment of BBGs, according to standardised scoring
- Helping to ensure that a positive working relationship with BBGs is maintained and ensure that the highest standards of dress and behaviour are adhered to
- Setting up equipment prior to training beginning and ensuring that the venue is tidy at the conclusion of each session
- Any other duties, within the scope of the post, as may be required by the Tournament Director, either directly or through the BBG Manager.
What part your role will play in The Championships
Whilst this is essentially a training role, availability for the Championships period is desirable. This can be either part or all day, as relevant. Duties would include:
- Supervision from start to end of day, including coach transport, registration, morning briefing, team change overs and end of day departure
- General supervision duties when in the BBG Complex
- Observing and assessment of on-court performance
- Working as part of sub-teams within the larger BBG Championships team; providing support and guidance to BBG Assistants

- Comfortable and confident to lead large groups of students
- Excellent communication skills

- First Aid qualification or willing to attend a course
- A Disclosure and Barring Service check will be carried out on your behalf by the AELTC and a fully clear disclosure is the minimum requirement for employment.
Desirable
- Teaching qualification
- Previous experience of being a BBG or working with/training BBGs
- An ability to devise innovative training drills and adapt as necessary depending on the training demands/cohort
